Abstinence is the best choice that any teen could make. Besides being the only reliable birth control, abstinence can make a real difference in a teen's life.

By learning to refrain from sexual activity, a teen gains self-respect and confidence while creating morals for themselves. All of these traits directly influence the character in a person as well as the rest of that person's life's choices. Someone who has self-respect is less likely to be negatively influenced by peers and is more likely to make wise choices. Morals are what guides a person to make responsible decisions and gain integrity, while self-confidence is what reveals the hidden potential in a person.

Although many peers do pressure teens into having sexual activity, not all fellow teenagers approve of having sex at their age. These are the teenagers that are mature and have respect for themselves and others. But when a teen breaks the code of abstinence, the respect for that individual is lost. Not only does that teen lose respect from peers, but from adults and elders as well. People would then look upon that teen with a different frame of mind and with a different attitude.

When a teen practices abstinence, there is no risk of pregnancy at all. However, when sexual abstinence is broken, the risk of pregnancy is ever abundant. Although there are other means of birth control such as birth control pills and condoms, these methods are not completely reliable.

If a teen does indeed become pregnant, this can mean a number of things for both the male and female. Having a child is an important commitment, not just while it is young, but for years on end. A baby also requires a lot of patience, care, and money, which many teens do not have much of. This fact can prove to be damaging to the child and the teens involved, because the child will not receive adequate care and the teens will miss out on their youthful years.

Having a baby can also take a tole on a teen's academics. Because a child demands so much attention and time, a teen would eventually have to put their schooling as a lower priority. Grades would then suffer, causing college and life opportunities to disappear. Minimum wage jobs would then be in the future far these teens, who possibly would have had a great potential if they had been abstinent and careful about the decisions they made.

Achieving sexual abstinence is quite easy. First of all, teens should stay away from the wrong crowd, the crowd that would try to influence them in a negative way. Instead, teens should hang out with peers that would accept them for who they are and not try to change them. That way, peer pressure would be avoided.

Another way for teens to achieve abstinence is to be the individual they are. Just because same people might be sexually active does not mean that everyone else has to be. Teens just need to be themselves and quit worrying about what others might think of them. Being content with themselves is much more important than others being content with them.

Overall, practicing abstinence prepares teens for their future. Sexual abstinence is one of the only things that teens can control about their life and future, and yet many teens forfeit their abstinence only to find that they no longer have control of their life and future.
